Wijnanda Deroo (b. 1955) has traveled the world to produce enigmatic photographs of people’s homes in Germany, Indonesia, Mexico, and the United States. She photographs private spaces, but does not usually include the residents themselves.
Taking a Closer Look
Deroo’s till life is an example of horror vacui, literally translated as “fear of empty spaces.” In Frogs, 2002, every inch of the photograph is filled with rich detail. The intricate patterns and saturated color contribute to the lively quality of the scene.
