It took Louise Bourgeois three years to complete this mural-size, three color print. Because the artist has colored certain areas by hand, each impression of the print (produced in an edition of 40) is slightly different from the rest.
Untitled seems to depict a confrontation between two rival groups of spiral forms, massed together at either end of Bourgeois's composition, with a pair of
forms isolated in the center, one looming over a much smaller version of itself.
These mysterious spirals could be interpreted as anything from stylized seashells, candies or insect larvae to phalluses. Likewise, the mood they evoke can range from amusing or mysterious to menacing. Bourgeois, who typically provides more than one \"explanation\" of her images, has described these spirals as maggots, (recalling the swarms of insects that invaded their family workshop in the summer) as well as harbingers of hope for the future.
Symbolism aside, the composition is particularly powerful because of the contrast Bourgeois has created between the heavily textured spirals, which seem to exist within three dimensional space, and the flat, monochromatic electric blue background.
